Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

What matters, in plain terms, before you ask for quotes.

Direction

A south-facing roof gives the most energy. East and west roofs still work, but produce roughly 15 to 20% less, according to Energy Saving Trust. North-facing slopes are not recommended. If your house has slopes facing different ways, we can often use two of them.

Pitch

A pitch of around 30 to 40 degrees is usually best in the UK. Shallower and steeper roofs still work, with some loss. Flat roofs can take panels on tilted frames.

Shade

Trees, chimneys, dormers and neighbouring buildings can shade panels for part of the day. Shade on one panel can pull down a string of panels, so we look at where and when it falls. Optimisers can limit the effect.

Roof type and condition

  • Bungalows often have large, simple roofs that suit panels well.
  • 1930s semis usually have two main slopes, which gives options.
  • Terraces have less space, but a south-facing back slope can work.
  • Slate, clay and stone roofs need careful fixings and an installer used to them.
  • Older roofs that need repair soon should be sorted before panels go on, because removing panels later costs money.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

Most houses can have panels under permitted development, so planning permission is not usually needed. Listed buildings, conservation areas and national parks are exceptions. Check with your local council or ask us.

What we check at the survey

We look at direction, pitch, shade, roof covering, structure and where the electrical supply enters your home. Then we tell you what the roof can realistically produce.

Related questions

Will solar panels work on my roof?

South-facing is ideal. East or west roofs still work, with roughly 15 to 20% less energy. North-facing roofs are not recommended. Shade from trees, chimneys and buildings reduces output. We check all of this at the survey.

Do I need planning permission?

Most houses can have solar panels under permitted development, so planning permission is not usually needed. Listed buildings, conservation areas and national parks are exceptions. Your system also has to be registered with your network operator, and we confirm what is needed for your property.

Do solar panels work when it is cloudy or raining?

Yes, at reduced output. Panels keep generating on cloudy and rainy days, just less than in bright sun.
